5-day Sahara loop from Marrakech via Skoura, Tinghir, the Merzouga dunes and Ouarzazate. A relaxed pace with kasbahs, gorges, and a desert camp night.
A gentler pace and a slightly different route than our shorter loops, spending a first night in the palm-fringed Skoura oasis before the Dades and Todra Gorges, allowing time to properly explore each kasbah and gorge rather than driving straight through.
Crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the route stops at Ait Benhaddou before reaching Ouarzazate, gateway to the south. The day ends in the lush Skoura Palm Grove, one of Morocco’s most photogenic oases, dotted with earthen kasbahs including the beautifully restored Kasbah Amridil, featured on the 50-dirham banknote.
The road winds through the Valley of Roses, famous each May for its rose harvest festival, before entering the dramatic Dades Gorges with their contorted “Monkey Fingers” rock formations. The day ends in Tinghir, overlooking a vast palm oasis at the foot of the High Atlas.
A short drive leads into the towering Todra Gorge for an optional walk beneath its sheer 300-metre walls. The route then crosses Erfoud and Rissani before reaching Merzouga, where camels carry guests into the Erg Chebbi dunes for an overnight stay at a traditional desert camp under the stars.
After a Sahara sunrise, the group retraces the Dades Valley back toward Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco” for its film studios that have hosted productions such as Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones. Time permitting, a visit to the imposing Taourirt Kasbah rounds out the day before overnighting in Ouarzazate.
The final leg revisits (or visits for the first time) the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou before climbing back over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, with stops at roadside Berber cooperatives selling argan oil and local crafts, arriving back in Marrakech in the late afternoon.
Ideal for: Travellers who prefer shorter driving days and more time to explore each stop at a relaxed pace.
