The route follows the Tizi n'Tichka Pass through the High Atlas before dropping to Ait Benhaddou, the postcard-perfect UNESCO kasbah, and Ouarzazate. From here the road enters the Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river oasis, lined with over 1.8 million palm trees and centuries-old kasbahs. The overnight stop in Agdz, a small oasis town guarded by the imposing Jbel Kissane massif, includes a visit to the fortified Kasbah Tamnougalt.
Continuing south along the Draa Valley, the road passes Zagora, famous for its historic signpost marking “52 days by camel to Timbuktu,” and Tamegroute, home to a centuries-old Koranic library of illuminated manuscripts and a cooperative producing distinctive green glazed pottery. Beyond M'Hamid El Ghizlane, the last permanent oasis before the open desert, the tarmac ends and a 4x4 or camel transfer leads into Erg Chigaga, the largest and most authentic dune sea in Morocco, with dunes reaching up to 300 metres. The night is spent in a desert camp far from any light pollution.
After a desert sunrise and breakfast at camp, the 4x4 or camels return travellers to M'Hamid, from where the tarmac road retraces the Draa Valley through Zagora, Agdz and Ouarzazate, crossing the Tizi n'Tichka Pass back to Marrakech in the late afternoon or evening.
