One-way 3-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes via the Dades Valley and Merzouga dunes. Camel trek, desert camp, and scenic Middle Atlas crossing.
The perfect way to connect Morocco’s two most popular cities without backtracking, this one-way journey takes travellers through the dramatic Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, with an unforgettable night among the Erg Chebbi dunes.
From the Sahara, the route continues north through the scenic Middle Atlas Mountains and their ancient cedar forests, arriving in Fes ready for the next chapter of your Moroccan adventure.
Leaving Marrakech behind, the journey climbs into the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest paved mountain pass in North Africa. Along the way, sweeping views reveal Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides.
A stop at the crumbling Telouet Kasbah offers a glimpse into the faded grandeur of the Glaoui dynasty, while a short detour to Ait Benhaddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village made famous by Gladiator and Game of Thrones, provides a spectacular highlight for photography lovers.
After lunch in the former garrison town of Ouarzazate, the route continues through the lush Skoura palm oasis and the fragrant Valley of Roses before reaching Boumalne Dades. Here, at the entrance to the dramatic Dades Gorges, the night is spent in a charming kasbah-style guesthouse.
The morning begins with a drive through the dramatic Dades Gorges, where wind-sculpted cliffs form the famous “Monkey Fingers” rock formations. The journey continues to the narrow, towering Todra Gorge, where an optional short walk takes travellers between its impressive 300-metre-high limestone walls.
The route then passes through the palm groves around Tinghir and the fossil-rich town of Erfoud, where local workshops cut and polish 350-million-year-old marine fossils into tables, sinks, and decorative pieces.
Continuing through Rissani, once the capital of the Tafilalt Oasis and the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, the first golden crests of the Erg Chebbi dunes soon appear on the horizon. In the late afternoon, a camel trek carries travellers deep into the dunes to a desert camp, where dinner is served beneath the stars around a campfire, accompanied by traditional Gnawa music.
Heading north from the dunes, the route follows the spectacular Ziz Valley Gorges, where a ribbon of lush palm trees winds through dramatic red sandstone cliffs before climbing onto the Middle Atlas plateau.
A stop in Ifrane, often nicknamed the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its Alpine-style architecture and charming stone chalets, offers a striking contrast to the desert landscapes. Just beyond, the Azrou Cedar Forest is home to wild Barbary macaques, which can often be spotted near the roadside.
The journey concludes in Fes, Morocco’s spiritual and cultural capital and home to the world’s largest car-free urban area.
