3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour

3-day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga via the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge. Camel trek, overnight desert camp, and return to Marrakech.

Day 1: Marrakech → Boumalne Dades

Leaving Marrakech behind, the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest paved mountain pass in North Africa. Along the way, sweeping views reveal Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides. A stop at the crumbling Telouet Kasbah offers a glimpse into the faded grandeur of the Glaoui dynasty, while a short detour to Ait Benhaddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village made famous by Gladiator and Game of Thrones, is a highlight for photography lovers.

After lunch in the former garrison town of Ouarzazate, the route continues through the Skoura palm oasis and the fragrant Valley of Roses before reaching Boumalne Dades. Here, at the entrance to the dramatic Dades Gorges, the night is spent in a charming kasbah-style guesthouse.

Day 2: Boumalne Dades → Merzouga

The morning begins with a drive through the dramatic Dades Gorges, where wind-sculpted cliffs form the famous “Monkey Fingers” rock formations. The journey continues to the narrow, towering Todra Gorge, with an optional short walk between its impressive 300-metre-high limestone walls.

The route then passes through the palm groves around Tinghir and the fossil-rich town of Erfoud, where local workshops cut and polish 350-million-year-old marine fossils into tables, sinks, and other decorative pieces. Continuing through Rissani, once the capital of the Tafilalt Oasis and the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, the first golden crests of the Erg Chebbi dunes soon appear on the horizon.

In the late afternoon, a camel trek carries travellers deep into the dunes to a desert camp. As the sun sets, dinner is served beneath the stars around a campfire, accompanied by traditional Gnawa music.

Day 3: Merzouga → Marrakech (direct return)

After watching the sunrise paint the Erg Chebbi dunes in shades of gold and pink, guests ride camels back to Merzouga village, where they can freshen up before beginning the long but scenic journey back to Marrakech.

The route retraces the lush palm groves of the Ziz Valley before crossing the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka Pass once again. By evening, guests arrive back in the Red City, bringing this unforgettable journey through Morocco’s mountains, valleys, and desert to a close.
