4-day round-trip desert tour from Marrakech through the Dades Valley, Merzouga dunes and Ouarzazate film studios. Camel trek and desert camp included.
Our classic desert loop offers a smoother, more relaxed pace than the 3-day version. After experiencing the dunes, the return journey includes an overnight stop in Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco,” rather than continuing straight through.
This extra stop allows you to enjoy the journey at a more comfortable pace and arrive back in Marrakech feeling refreshed and well-rested rather than road-weary.
Leaving Marrakech behind, the journey climbs into the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest paved mountain pass in North Africa. Along the way, sweeping views reveal Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides.
A stop at the crumbling Telouet Kasbah offers a glimpse into the faded grandeur of the Glaoui dynasty, while a short detour to Ait Benhaddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village made famous by Gladiator and Game of Thrones, provides a spectacular highlight for photography lovers.
After lunch in the former garrison town of Ouarzazate, the route continues through the lush Skoura palm oasis and the fragrant Valley of Roses before reaching Boumalne Dades. Here, at the entrance to the dramatic Dades Gorges, the night is spent in a charming kasbah-style guesthouse.
The morning begins with a drive through the dramatic Dades Gorges, where wind-sculpted cliffs form the famous “Monkey Fingers” rock formations. The journey continues to the narrow, towering Todra Gorge, where an optional short walk takes travellers between its impressive 300-metre-high limestone walls.
The route then passes through the palm groves around Tinghir and the fossil-rich town of Erfoud, where local workshops cut and polish 350-million-year-old marine fossils into tables, sinks, and decorative pieces.
Continuing through Rissani, once the capital of the Tafilalt Oasis and the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, the first golden crests of the Erg Chebbi dunes soon appear on the horizon. In the late afternoon, a camel trek carries travellers deep into the dunes to a desert camp, where dinner is served beneath the stars around a campfire, accompanied by traditional Gnawa music.
After witnessing a spectacular Sahara sunrise, the group retraces the Dades Valley toward Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco” for its renowned film studios, which have hosted productions such as Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones.
Time permitting, a visit to the imposing Taourirt Kasbah offers a final glimpse into the region’s rich history before the group settles in for an overnight stay in Ouarzazate.
The final leg of the journey revisits—or, for those experiencing it for the first time, introduces—the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou. From here, the route climbs back over the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka Pass, with stops along the way at roadside Berber cooperatives offering locally produced argan oil and traditional crafts.
The journey continues through the High Atlas Mountains before arriving back in Marrakech in the late afternoon, bringing the desert adventure to a memorable close.
Ideal for: First-time visitors to Morocco who want the essential desert loop at a comfortable pace.
